I have a process that i use to help everyone new to the sport to help pick a first gun. I'm not saying this way is perfect or it is the right way, but it is a way. There are a few steps to the process
1. Get an idea of what kind of gun you are looking for. (ex. m4, ak)
There are a few ways to decide what kind of gun you want, but the best way is to decide what gun feels good to you. If possible try to hold a gun that you are interested in. Another thing is think of what role you want to play. Whether it be assault, designated marksman, or support gunner.
2. Find out what your price cap is.
Know how much money you have to spend, and balance what you want. Getting upgrades and accessories aren't necessary at first. If you invest the most money you can into your first gun, you can get a better gun that wont need as many upgrades. also if you buy a red dot, and decide you don't like using a red dot, you have just wasted money on a red dot.
3. Look up reviews.
Once you have found a gun that you like look up a review of it on youtube or other airsoft sites. Do some research, but keep an open mind. Have a few guns in mind, so you have a fallback if your first choice doesn't work out. DO NOT ASK WHICH ONE IS BEST!!! It's always a good idea to have done your research
4. Ask opinions
Ask some experienced players what their opinions are on the guns you have found. AGAIN, DON'T ASK WHICH IS BEST. Experienced players are usually happy to give you an opinion, but asking for them to baby you and tell you what the best gun is annoys them. Mostly because each person is different
5. Make a choice.
Now that you have done some research, make a choice based off what you learned. Keep in mind the steps you took to find that gun. sometimes it helps to make a check list.
If you follow these steps you have a better chance of picking a good first gun for you. But don't forget to keep an open mind. No gun is going to be 100% perfect. But you should get close
