I think that I'm going to have to either paint the tip chrome or silver. I've tried everything and nothing seems to work without scratching the chrome. And seeing how Munster put it back together without TWO springs in it , I don't really think it's that big of a deal right now.

I know this is a necro post but I wanted to add an alternative. I would buff the white paint off with a dremel tool buffing wheel and jewelers rouge rubbing compound.

Oh, by the way. atleast in certain cities, such as Detroit possession of a replica without a orange tip is considered a facsimile firearm and is subject to be confiscated as mere possession is considered a misdemeanor. I will look for the statue in my ordinance book if I remember to look for it.
The ordinance is rather old but is still enforced.

My uncle who is a state police officer says its more of a "sidewalk law" where nobody really obeys it. Just like it is a law in Michigan to spit on the sidewalk and swear in front of minors. How many cops enforce that?

we write tickets for disorderly conduct for indecent /lewd conduct which can include profane language, or for creating an improper diversion disrupting the peace and good order of the neighborhood. section 38-2-2 thru section 38-3-1 cover disorderly conduct for the most part. For spitting on the sidewalk as I recall it is a civil infraction. We confiscate toy pistols or starter pistols, place them on evidence and issue misdemeanor tickets under section 38-16-3 of city of Detroit ordinance. cap guns are actually mentioned under section19-3-64 in the remarks about fireworks... Anyway, the section about facsimile firearms states in part" unlawful to possess, draw, exhibit, or brandish a replica or facsimile firearm." Keep in mind that these are all old, antiquated ordinances for public order and as your uncle said they are frequently disobeyed. We actually enforce the facsimile forearm one fairly often because some idiot decides to carry a toy gun to intimidate people. People attending a reenactment, such as a war reenactment or part of a stage play, or filming a movie are exempt in most cases from this. To my knowledge airsoft would be treated as a reenactment, but like I said the ordinance is old and antiquated... a modern revision is long over due but the city always has other things to worry about besides toy guns. [glow=red,2,300]Well, it looks like I pulled off a thread jacking here, sorry about that, I just wanted to offer useful...or maybe useless information, to anyone interested.[/glow] Like your uncle said though, these ords are not always obeyed or enforced, mostly you see them used when police really, really, really want to screw deal with someone who is a nuisance to them. just be polite and offer donuts if you get puled over! As for removing the paint without causing damage, I still recommend a dremell or similar buffing wheel and jewelers-rouge-paste (a mild abrasive buffing compound that wont hurt the metal) or maybe a brass stripping wheel, brass being a softer metal wont hurt steel underneath the paint, if it is steel.
